Collider Day
Sep. 10th, 2008 09:49 amWe've just bought a couple of daylight bulbs for the living room. This is all part of our multi-pronged strategy for beating the recession and making this winter a happy experience. It may be glooming outside, but inside it'll be as bright as May Day and we won't get SAD.
We've also invested in fleeces. Mine has little skull and crossbones all over it.
I understand the Large Hadron Collider has been switched on. This is probably the most important event of the 21st century thus far. I don't think we've been sucked into an alternate universe, but if we had, would we notice?

Date: 2008-09-10 09:14 am (UTC)I think we need some,too.
The logs for the fire are piling up nicely.
I like the sound of your fleece and I'm very glad to still be alive on this planet.

Date: 2008-09-10 11:37 am (UTC)They cost us £3.19 each- but they were more expensive than most because we had to have screw fittings.
I wish we had a wood burning stove. My mother got rid of hers because it was unsightly- a mistake I think. She lives down your end of the country and is surrounded by trees.

Date: 2008-09-10 02:37 pm (UTC)I would go for Audrey Hepburn... except that she is no longer living... that might not be too wise of a choice.

Date: 2008-09-10 04:14 pm (UTC)"...stuck on many surfaces of the grand machine are stickers of a proud Bucky Badger as well as many UW-Madison logos.
They have been left there over the past 15 years of construction by the many UW-Madison researchers and engineers who have played a crucial role in bringing to life a machine most scientists believe will necessitate a rewriting of physics textbooks."
I have to admit, though, that I haven't been following this at ALL. In fact, I hadn't heard of the Large Hadron Collider until you mentioned it!
Oh, and the universe as seen from over here seems the same as always. As you say, though, how would we know? ;-)
Re: and in Wisconsin...
Date: 2008-09-10 04:38 pm (UTC)Which is nice.
My nephew- the physicist- is going to spend time at Cern next year. I can't tell you how proud that makes me feel!
a little late in this thread but ...
Date: 2008-09-10 11:06 pm (UTC)Isn't that the premise of most of the Twilight Zone episodes or all of Philip Dick's novels?
If we are in an alternative universe but don't know it yet, what is the distinguishing characteristic of this new one?
* brussel sprouts taste good?
* Macs crash more frequently than PCs?
Re: a little late in this thread but ...
Date: 2008-09-11 11:09 am (UTC)Hey, maybe I've always been in that other universe....

Tho, I'll need to try the chestnuts idea.

As for the Collider: "It's the end of the world as we know it, but I feel fine...."
