Collider Day
Sep. 10th, 2008 09:49 amWe've just bought a couple of daylight bulbs for the living room. This is all part of our multi-pronged strategy for beating the recession and making this winter a happy experience. It may be glooming outside, but inside it'll be as bright as May Day and we won't get SAD.
We've also invested in fleeces. Mine has little skull and crossbones all over it.
I understand the Large Hadron Collider has been switched on. This is probably the most important event of the 21st century thus far. I don't think we've been sucked into an alternate universe, but if we had, would we notice?

and in Wisconsin...

They have been left there over the past 15 years of construction by the many UW-Madison researchers and engineers who have played a crucial role in bringing to life a machine most scientists believe will necessitate a rewriting of physics textbooks."
I have to admit, though, that I haven't been following this at ALL. In fact, I hadn't heard of the Large Hadron Collider until you mentioned it!
Oh, and the universe as seen from over here seems the same as always. As you say, though, how would we know? ;-)

My nephew- the physicist- is going to spend time at Cern next year. I can't tell you how proud that makes me feel!
