Rachel the rabbit had a stroke or a seizure and lost the use of her legs and had to be put to sleep.

Oh.

We weren't expecting this.

We'd had her about 10 months,  she came to us from a rescue centre and must have been about 5 years old.

Tosh has been going from room to room,  looking for her.

And now he's sitting by my chair. He needs the company. I reach down and tickle his nose.

Oh, poor Rachel, poor Tosh, poor you. How sudden and horrible. I am sorry.

Thanks.

Usually with pets you can see that they're going down hill but this was sudden.

Oh, how sad! I'd forgotten that you got them from a rescue centre as mature adults. Average lifespan is about 6-10 years, apparently, so she was perhaps a little older than you thought, or just unlucky.

Poor Tosh. :-(

We got Tosh as a baby, but when we needed a companion for him we went to the Rescue Centre.

5 is just a guess. She had a considerable back story. The Centre had had her for 18 months. They'd tried placing her with another family before us but it hadn't worked out. And at some time in the past she'd belonged to a zoo.

Thank you.

I love that line from Richard Adams. It has a lovely, mythic touch.

Wow. That's very sad for all. Breaks my heart for poor Tosh. Don't you wish, if for only a moment, that you spoke Rabbit?

I'm so very sorry for your loss.

Thank you.

We're going to have to get him a new companion. Rabbits are social creatures. They don't thrive on their own.

As others have said, I'm very sorry to hear this news. I think we had all got to know your rabbits virtually through your posts about them, and I'll miss hearing about her antics. I do hope you are able to choose a nice little friend for Tosh soon.

We're going to an abandoned animals sanctuary this afternoon to check out a new rabbit. The word on the street is that rabbits shouldn't be left alone and the sooner we get Tosh a companion the better.

I´m so sorry to read this. I know what losing a dear animal friend suddenly feels like all too well. I do hope you can find a compatible friend for Tosh. He must be so confused, poor boy. No matter how they go or how prepared we may be, it´s never easy and especially not like this, so suddenly.

"He must be so confused, poor boy"

I believe he is. Rabbits don't make noises or have facial expressions, but the way he's been behaving has been eloquent.

Oh, I'm so sorry - losing a pet is just devastating. They are, in many ways, like perpetual children, only without the "I hate you! You're mean and horrible!" tantrums.

Please post pictures of the new bunny when you get back!

Tosh and Rachel were friendly enough but I don't think they were exactly soulmates. For one thing she was a lot older than him. She tolerated his rambunctiousness and when it got too annoying she just shrugged and walked away.

The death of a pet is always traumatic ... to me, just like the death of any family member ...we had a wild rabbit pet when I was a kid... he seemed to live forever ...died of advanced senility I think.

I'm told rabbits can expect to live between six and ten years. I think our Rachel fell somewhere within that range.
