 An online friend writes about seeing shoppers being beastly to cashiers at Christmas- some of whom were on the brink of tears.  I feel a sermon coming on.

Doesn't "All Men" include cashiers?

I have had shocking success with the phrase "I don't think you're being very kind". I don't know what it is, but it works more often than it really should. It's not 100% by a long shot, but it's better than 50% and your friend might try it in the future. My success with other approaches is much lower.

(In certain markets, "I don't think you're being a good witness" or "acting very Christian" might work better, of course.)

It's not difficult to be kind. It just takes a certain presence of mind....

That's something I'd never do especially as in a small town like ours, you tend to know most of the cashiers!

Some of it is, of course, misogyny as it's largely 'all women'.

Yeah, that's one of the good things about keeping things small, you get to know the people you deal with and (hopefully) build up a positive relationship with them.

Life is so much easier and pleasanter if you practice kindness.
