I have had shocking success with the phrase "I don't think you're being very kind". I don't know what it is, but it works more often than it really should. It's not 100% by a long shot, but it's better than 50% and your friend might try it in the future. My success with other approaches is much lower.
Yeah, that's one of the good things about keeping things small, you get to know the people you deal with and (hopefully) build up a positive relationship with them.
