A Plus B

A Channel 4 reporter is standing in the wet with a group of disgruntled Somerset villagers. He asks about the work being done by government agencies and a young woman says the government hasn't done anything and local  people are having to fend for themselves.

Two things have come together this winter. The first is the realization that climate change (no matter what caused it) is now a reality we're going to have to live with and the second is a confirmation of the suspicion that the government we elect and pay for (political affiliation immaterial) is absolutely bloody useless.

A plus B equals what, I wonder?

P.S. The government which has let us down so badly on climate change and flood defences has responded to the crisis by having a dog fight over who exactly is responsible.

Oddly enough, this neither endears them to us nor inspires confidence.

P.P.S. By government I want to make it clear I mean the whole apparatus of government. We're talking about a failure of the system over many years, decades even- a failure of foresight, of vision, of competence and expertise-  and not about the failure of the particular bunch of numpties who happen to be in power at present.
