Because Obama won't say "no" to Netanyahu and Cameron won't say "no" to Obama the overstretched British military are gearing up for a war of choice against Iran.

I can't quite believe it.

How many more Muslims do we need to kill?

Where's the money coming from?

Why this appetite/tolerance for military humiliation?

My instinct is to say "they much know something that we don't" but I thought that about Iraq and all they had were Weapons of Mass Distraction and a belief in God On Our Side.

Well, they're close to developing a nuclear capacity. This is regrettable, but I don't think bombing them is the answer.

Iran is not Iraq. I was there (admittedly only for 2 hours) but did my research. The Persians are not about to throw down their guns and surrender to the first friendly Yank.

There probably will be. Not that the last one did any good....

It is typical bloody jingoism again. We always follow the Americans and it does us no good. It will be a shambles and we cannot afford another excursion out there. Plain mad. If women ruled we would not have this militaristic approach.

And the Americans, for some reason, always do what the Israelis want. It's something I've never fully understood.

They're our greatest ally and that's it. End of story. Forget the spying, the USS Liberty, human rights, the impact on Muslim relations: they're our greatest ally.

I hope when you say "Americans" you mean the ones who are running our country, rather than the rank and file. I think it has been so many years since there was all that nuke hype that people on both sides of the pond have forgotten that the act of lighting the nuclear torch will be a Weapon of SELF Destruction. Just about all of my 70 years have been lived in the shadow of the Bomb, and damn it, I am really tired of the whole literal shooting match.
We Americans are sick and tired of trumped up wars and pissing away billions of dollars supporting said wars, not to mention the cost in human life and loss of quality of life. But does the government listen?
I guess it's time for me to shut down the media once again, like I had to do during the Vietnam debacle, and join the people in the street to demonstrate against yet another war.
Funny that we are pulling soldiers out of Iraq, yet plan to keep them a visible presence in other countries in the Gulf region, isnt it? We can hardly claim that the war is over under those circumstances.
As far as the Arab-Israeli thing is concerned, I am in favor of letting them go at it without us mixing in at all. Enough of this "Big Brother to the World" business!

Won't say no or can't say no to Netanyahu? I find the distinction important and an inability to make that distinction telling.

Cole's analysis seems about right, to my eye.

And on a personal note, if the Republicans fail to retake the White House next year, I suspect that I shall lose all of my British friends. The reflexive contempt in which they hold America and Americans demands a contemptible American president, one that lives down to their expectations.
