A canvasser from the Labour party called.  A handsome young man in a donkey jacket. I told him I might support Labour in the by-election that'll be coming soon in Old(ham East) and Sad(dleworth)-  but I'd like to see their candidate first.  Actually, reflecting on it, I don't see how I can possibly vote anything but Labour, now that a vote for the Lib Dems is effectively a vote for the Tory assault on the Welfare State.

Watkins can go take a running jump, he was a lousy candidate anyway. The LibDems would have pissed it in May had they picked Howard Sykes. They didn't. Now, as Clegg and co act by-and-large like Tory enablers, as far as I'm concerned they can get stuffed.

I'd like to see their candidate first.

That will be *crucial* in this by-election; if Labour have got anything about them and are truly repentant about the New Labour years, they had better not select a) Woolas's agent Joe Fitzpatrick, who is just as guilty as Woolas, or b) some retread like Charles Clarke or (shudder) James "Workhouse" Purnell. Surely there must be some good Labour people in the Oldham area, maybe in local government or the unions?

Reassuring to see the return of the donkey jacket rather than the Emporio Armani suit as the canvasser's outfit of choice, though.

I liked the canvasser. He seemed proper old Labour.

I told him I thought Phil Woolas was a timeserver and a racist and he agreed that Woolas was a man about whom people have strong opinions.

Strikes me as odd, but, as they say, strange bedfellows make politcs.

They haven't even called the election yet. They can't because the sitting member was turfed out by a judge for wrongdoing and is currently launching an appeal. Until the case is settled we'll be without an MP (not that anyone is likely to notice).
