The World Cup merchandise in Sainbury's has been marked down to half price.

If you were really savvy- and expected to live another 50 years- you'd buy it all up, squirrel it away, then release it onto the antiquities market in 2060- by which time it will be amusingly quirky and very rare. You'd make a killing!

EB 'lost' his football (over the garages at the bottom of the road) at the weekend. I did tell him that monday could well be an excellent time to be in the market for a new football, as they'd most likely be on sale.

Indeed. He couldn't have lost it at a better time.

A kid down the street had his football run over by a 4><4 last week. I heard the pop. So sad!

He does have numerous other footballs of various sizes and construction, but that one was his particular favourite.

He's never really shown much interest in football until recently. When asked if he wanted to watch the match yesterday, he shrugged, said 'nah', and went outside to play with his mates. He would reappear periodically to check on the score, and on finding it to be 4-1 with ten minutes left said 'so, that's us knocked out then?'

I said, yes, most likely. He grinned, said 'oh well' and promptly disappeared off outside again.

To him, it's just a game. Maybe more people should share his opinion?

I heartily agree.

The triumph of football is a triumph of marketing. We're being played for suckers.

If we got behind our cricketers with the same fervour we would have had a much jollier weekend. We just beat Australia for pity's sake- but the media have barely noticed.

It didn't used to be. It was all about tribal loyalty in the old days when my Gran and Granddad and Great Aunty Ethel had season tickets for Manchester United and the other side of the family had season tickets for Manchester City.

I was the child of a mixed marriage, which is why my brother played rugby and the only football team we ever supported was Bury. We didn't want to alienate either side because we knew where our Christmas presents came from! :)

That tribal thing still exists- and the moneymen exploit it.

I grew up in a football-free environment- and have never really been able to understand what all the fuss is about.

There's something sadly appropriate about its being stuffed, at any rate.

I resisted, but perhaps I need to go back and buy one- for its symbolic value.

Er, no thanks. I think I'll give that a miss.

I'm just relieved it's all over bar the shouting...
