Swine Flu?

What I should have done when my throat started hurting at 5 o'clock in the morning is got up, made a cup of tea and taken a couple of co-codamol. That way I could have temporarily stunned the virus and returned to sleep. As it was I lay there drifting feverishly between sleep and wake until breakfast time.

Ailz has been ill for a week. I started feeling symptoms a couple of days ago. We went to the doctor's this afternoon and she poked in our ears and looked in our throats and prescribed cough drops and saltwater gargles. Basically, there's nothing we can do about this thing except wait for it to go away.

What I really want to know is if we've got swine flu. Could be. The symptoms measure up.

Yeah. It could well be as it's not flu season and it would be odd to have the more known flus right now.

I wonder if we'll show up in the statistics when our GP makes her returns.

You would have to write a poem about it, if so. But all things considered, I'd rather take the loss to art and see you with an ordinary unseasonal cold.

It's not a cold. I'm pretty sure of that. The symptoms are all wrong. It's some sort of slightly unusual virus.

I'm surprised they didn't test you for H1N1 - that probably means that you are lacking one of the key symptoms, maybe your temperatures are not high enough. I'm sure any GP would be totally orgasmic to report some cases on their patch, so perhaps it is just the more quotidian kind of bloody horrible cold.

Get well soon, either way.

We've both got sore throats. Ailz also has ear-ache and swollen glands. Oddly enough neither of us has the sniffles.

Thanks.

I hope you both get over it quickly, whatever variety of 'flu it is.

There are definitely some strange bugs going around. Could it all be the Swine Flu? Here in Germany a lot of people are coming down with really ugly joint pains, swollen throats and light fever, but apparently it is not "that" flu. Weird stuff. In any case, I sure hope you and Ailz are well soon!

Thanks for your good wishes.

Sore throat, light fever- that's what I've got. I don't know about joint pains because I have those all the time.

Two of the people I know who had those symptoms insisted on getting their blood taken and analyzed, because they had been to Spain recently where there are lots of cases, and the analysis came out as "absolutely not the Mexico-Flu, but just one of the many summer flu viruses which are around every year and are principally seen in periods where hot weather changes nearly daily with rain and draught" said the doctor. I haven't heard about cases like that in Italy yet but that makes sense, as the weather is constantly very hot there.

I guess there are always plenty of viruses going around. We only notice this particular one- swine flu- because it has done that rare thing and leaped between species.

One of my colleagues at work had a really bad dose of flu a few weeks back. He phoned up the doctor, worried that he may have swine flu. The doctor's reply: "Are you going oink oink?"

Even if it's swine flu, I believe you're both of the age where you'd have some natural immunity to the virus. Hope you feel a bit soon, whatever it is.

If it was swine flu, it would be something to brag about. I've never had a newsworthy disease before.

Thanks for your good wishes. I think we're on the mend- or, at least, Ailz is- but then she got started several days before me.

Wishing you both a speedy recovery. Take good care of each other, wont you?

Thank you. We're doing OK. As the doctor said, there's not a lot we can do except wait for the virus to run its course.
