It's getting round the congregation that I used to be a vicar. The latest to find out is a woman called Auriel, who introduced herself as the friend of one of my former girlfriends.

Auriel- such a pretty name! I looked it up; it means Light of God.

It's also the name of an Archangel. The Archangel of the Watchtower of the North.

I still don't really know why I'm doing this-  going to church, I mean-  but I've decided to stop worrying about it and just get it done.

I've decided to stop worrying about it

Good idea.

as it occurred to you that the Parable of the Prodigal Son, may be something more than Jesus telling a pretty story?

...or that the Establishment's idea of what it means to be a Christian is a load of old horse leavings?

I'm happy to identify as an Anglican, but not as a Christian.

An Anglican Pagan perhaps. I doesn't make a lot of sense- except as a piece of mischief making.

I'm not sure if i could go back without wanting to argue too much about *their ideas* about what they are reading and mine...

when I was a Xn always felt like we were reading a differnt book!

This is a fairly liberal parish- leastways the clergy who serve it are. The guy who preached yesterday spoke of how "some people thought of Jesus as the Son of God"- with the implication- if you chose to dig- that he himself didn't.

Re going to church - before enlightenment, chop wood, carry water. After enlightenment? Chop wood, carry water :)

I believe people whose names have a meaning are signs in themselves - but I'm superstitious that way!

That's very good. I need to call upon my reserves of zen.

I agree about names- which is why I made a point of recording Auriel's. the more I think about it, the more significant it seems.

Let dreamers dream
What worlds they please
Those Edens can't be found.
The sweetest flowers,
The fairest trees
Are grown in solid ground.

We're neither pure, nor wise, nor good
We'll do the best we know.
We'll build our house and chop our wood
And make our garden grow.
And make our garden grow!

Do you know this absolutely gorgeous song? ... coming after all the Voltairean cynicism and satire, it's surprisingly moving ... you probably do know it, but if you don't know this score ... it's brilliant.

Somehow,...

...I think the meaning of Auriel's name is going to mean something in regards to why you are going to church.

I know thia may not make sense but it's just a feeling I have.

Hope that you and yours are doing all right, that things are going okay, and that today goes all right for you all.

God bless and take care. :).

I think the same. Which is why I made a point of recording the name and researching it.

I recently started church. I don't know why either. I used to be a priest.

I see we're more or less the same age too.

One of my theories is that what I'm doing is making peace with my past.
