I was reading in Der Speigel how Kristkindlmarkets have become very popular in England. And there's a huge one in Chicago every year, too- which I really must try to visit.

Mmmm- gluhwein!

Sorry, did I bombard you with identical replies to this? LJ was behaving in a most peculiar fashion last night!

I like these pictures...
it is the kind of atmosphere I
like ,bright and colorful with
all sorts of things juxtaposed.

Thanks. Yes, I was trying for that crowded, higgledy-piggledy look.

I used to go down into Manchester a lot. These days it's a rare occurence- I guess because we do most of our shopping online.

How lovely! It's rather like the Chicago Market.

It fills almost every public space in the city centre.

It's lots bigger then. Or... your city center is not too large?

It's fairly compact.

I'm not sure how Manchester measures up to Chicago. I would guess they're approximately the same size.

Chicago is one of the biggest cities in the world...

Population: 2,836,658

Manchester population: 458,100

I'm not sure we're comparing like with like.

The city of Manchester is one borough in a collection of boroughs- all pretty much joined together- which make up the Metropolitan County of Greater Manchester. The Metropolitan County has a population of around 2 1/2 million.

Ohhh... similar then! Chicago has many connected suburbs... not boroughs but still connected. I have no idea of the complete population of that whole area. You haven't been to Chicago?

I definitely have not been to Manchester... would love to visit though!

But this one is all made of lights!

Manchester used to have one that clung to the tower of the town hall as if climbing it. This is a distinct improvement.

Now THAT is what I am talking about when I say Boston disappointed me this year. Downtown usd to be all dressed up for the season, but now there is a gaping hole in the ground where Filene's Basement used to be, with construction at a standstill. Of the five major department stores that used to grace the corner of Winter and Washington Streets, all are gone, except for the Jordan Marsh Building which was taken over by Macy's. The Filene's main building still stands, but has been gutted for a someday condominium conversion project. Yuck!
Your downtown Manchester does it right!
