So did he choke her? Did he object to her breastfeeding their kid because those were "his" breasts?

I'll never hear Yesterday again without asking myself those questions.

A carefully-managed reputation turns to dust.

I am baffled and interested.

I think McCartney is a big, spoiled kid who isn't used to having people say "no" to him.

It's all rather sad.

Oh, Paul.

Yes, this morning they said she was following him around with a camera documenting everything.

Ugh.

I haven't followed this closely. I mostly remember hearing that Paul and Linda didn't believe in killing anything, so cockroaches roamed freely through their house.

Paul and Linda lived the fairytale. It's a shame that this second marriage is tarnishing our memories of the first.

That's my problem--do people really make such accusations out of whole cloth?

The scary thing is that his reputation is destroyed now whether or not the accusations are true.

Tarnished, yes, but destroyed?

I guess I don't really care. My brother leaves for Iraq in a week; somehow I can't really care about Paul McCartney.

I'll grant you that: "destroyed" is a bit strong. The music remains untouched. But his image as this ultra-nice, unspoiled, perennially youthful guy is going to be hard to rebuild.

Yes, compared to what's going in Iraq, the doings of celebs don't amount to a hill of beans.

That's terrible about your brother...

Yes, he'll never have the image of "unspoiled, perennially youthful" again. You're right, that's been destroyed.

He'll get back a good image, but it won't be the same bright, shining one.

I'd like to think well of him because of the tunes. Otherwise I don't really suppose it's any of my business.

He's just a man, not some kind of god. On the other hand, working in the legal business (although mostly doing my best to distance myself from domestic relations proceedings), I have seen incredible accusations made against former loved ones, either to squeeze out a little more cash or to just slash at one another in order to hurt or to make up for the loss of love.

Are the accusations true? exaggerated? false? We'll never know for sure. But the damage to his reputation has been done.

That's the problem with being an idol of millions, isn't it? There eventually comes some proof of their humanness and it's such a long and hard way down to hard earth. Personally, I'm not really bothered one way or the other, but then Paul never WAS my favorite Beatle anyway. :P

Nor mine...

Though he did write some of my favourite songs.

To me, the sad thing isn't that the man's reputation might be damaged now. It's that celebrities have this kind of constant media access, that they can have a falling out or a break-up and thus for three months the 'news' tells us all the he-said she-said as if the intimate details of this pair's inner workings are somehow important in the Big Picture.

Make them deal with it privately, like regular people, I say. Make them stop using the media as a weapon against each other.

Today the word is that he's hitting back (so to speak.) According to his people, she used to beat him. Poor Sir Paul.

They seem to have chosen to go this route. The other option- "we've come to an arrangement and we're still good friends"- was always open to them and at first it seemed as if they'd take it.

Then we call it a draw. They both walloped on each other, that's a fight, not abuse, so neither side gets to use the claim in court.

(The law is swift and brutal and not kind to drama in mokievania.)

Without in-laws and (not so) well-meaning friends poking their noses in, and lawyers spotting a good target, they might still be okay with that arrangement. Probably too late now, more's the pity.
