My friend Judy suggests that what we need in this climate of urban suspicion is hand luggage made of clear plastic.

I think she could be on to something.

Anyway, I float the idea. Maybe there's someone out there in a position to develop it.....

ext_12726: (move more summer)
From: [identity profile] heleninwales.livejournal.com
I'd thought of that too.

Many years ago, the summer I left school, I worked in the Co-op biscuit works. They didn't mind you eating the odd biscuit while working; they knew that even the biggest biscuit eater soon tires of them, but they did used to search bags as people went home at night to stop people taking biscuits away. But if you didn't want your bag searched, you could opt to carry a transparent bag and be waved through at a glance. I had a cheerful tranparent plasic tote bag with a sunflower on the side. With all this retro 60s and 70s fashion around, they could make a comeback, along with matching transparent rucksacks.

Someone might just make a lot of money out of it too...

And, yes, the bags could be very attractive. I like the idea of a sunflower motif!

Now, I just HAD to post a picture of the bag I'm using these days :) I have several of them.. one yellow, one orange, one white, and this one. I bought them last year at a sale, 3 euro each, and I just love them :)

The picture isn't showing up.

And I really want to see it........

Hm. Now what did I write wrong, I wonder? Try again, dadi..

Ah, that's it.

Yes, that's splendid. Ailz would like one of those; purple is her favourite colour.

If I happen to find one of them again, I'll ask you for your address and send it to you! but I haven't seen them around since last year, alas!

That would be lovely.

Maybe someday we won't be allowed to carry anything!

You know how in science fiction movies set in the far future everyone always dressed alike, in silver jumpsuits (with or without lightning bolts on the chest)?

When they get on their rocketships, are they ever carrying suitcases?

Do women carry purses?

Nope. It's because in the mad days of terrorism, people were killed for running, for wearing odd or padded clothing, and for carrying things.

Those sci-fi writers saw it all. They were true prophets.

It's probably only a matter of time, but I'd be mortified if people saw the shabby way I pack.

Not only will it deter suicide bombers, it will encourage the honest citizen to be neat and tidy.

When I still lived in the States the kids in the school district next to where I taught had to carry backpacks that could be seen through.

(Note: This run-on sentence PROVES I am a math teacher and not an English teacher!)

LOL

And presumably that was to stop them carrying weapons etc into school.

It makes sense.

There are many schools in California, especially in the bigger cities, that require this. First they did away with lockers, then they gave the kids these flimsy little vinyl bookbags, then increased the courseloads... seems like a recipe for scoliosis and broken bookbags to me.

One of the gun safety videos I saw had a kid, wearing normal clothing, sitting at a table. They passed a metal detector over him and he went off like a car alarm. Then he pulled out 8(!) handguns from various concealed places on his person.

So. As a former ne'er-do-well: I suggest banning clothing. Or making all clothing see-through.

Now that's a really good idea.

I know in a lot of troubled U.S. high schools students are required to use clear or mesh backpacks.

I don't want the authorities to impose it or anything like that but- to quote Judy- "I think clear luggage could be a way of being neighborly, of reassuring the person sitting across the aisle from you."

Who ever thought Twiggy would come back into fashion for security purposes? :)
