Who did the Queen invite to an intimate lunch at Buckingham Palace to celebrate her 90th birthday? Representatives of the Great British establishment? Fellow nonagenarians? The heads of the Commonwealth of which she used to be so fond? Dame Helen Mirren?

No, none of the above. The answer is the President of the United States and his wife.

I take it as an apt symbol of our current status as a client state of the USA or- at least- of the Corporations that now rule the world through Washington.

And the Corporate shill President chose this occasion to intervene- a little heavy-handedly and with threats attached- in the internal affairs of our nation by telling us he'd like us to stay in the European Union where he and his masters can keep better tabs on us

Serves us right, I suppose, for having once presumed to be a great Imperial power. The wheel turns and now we ourselves are imperial subjects. We used to be the boss, now we get bossed; it's what happens...

On dune and headland sinks our fire.

Can't say I like it much...

You all should totally ignore him. Half our country does.

:)

We're a divided country too. Half of us want out of Europe and half want to stay in. Obama's intervention has ruffled feathers.

I'd say he's astonishingly tone deaf about such things, but it's not that. He's just so amazingly narcissistic that it never occurs to him that other people might not require his guidance and opinions.

It's embarrassing. Like being led by a self-centered teen.

In this instance it may well be that David Cameron put him up to it.

Most national leaders are embarrassing. I find it hard to think of any that aren't.

Maybe she just thinks he's a nice guy and fun to hang out with? He seems that way to me.

If she'd merely wanted entertaining she could have had Stephen Fry.

Or Peter Kay

Or Caitin Moran...

If he'd ordered his troops to torch Parliament and the palace, we could almost call it even.

He shills for the people who elected him as well, so for us it's something of a wash.

What a long time to hold a grudge...:)

Mind you, the Palace of Westminster and Buckingham Palace are hideous buildings and if they were to disappear overnight I wouldn't be desperately sorry...

I don't see how we can prevent Obama having an opinion and expressing it in public. I understand that Putin and ISIS want us to leave, if that's any comfort.

It's considered polite for visiting foreign statesmen to keep their noses out of the domestic affairs of the host nation.

Does Isis really want us out? I don't see why they would give a damn.

According to The News Quiz they do, though they did wonder how anyone knew, and who had gone canvassing their opinion.

If it's any comfort, Chez Blanchard is of the opinion that we are witnessing the waning days of the American Empire. Seen through that lens, it's one has-been telling another has-been what to do.

I think you're right. Empires have a limited shelf life. There's no reason why yours should last any longer than ours.

Yes, it's no fun being ruled by foreigners- even if their rule is comparatively benign.
