Who did the Queen invite to an intimate lunch at Buckingham Palace to celebrate her 90th birthday? Representatives of the Great British establishment? Fellow nonagenarians? The heads of the Commonwealth of which she used to be so fond? Dame Helen Mirren?

No, none of the above. The answer is the President of the United States and his wife.

I take it as an apt symbol of our current status as a client state of the USA or- at least- of the Corporations that now rule the world through Washington.

And the Corporate shill President chose this occasion to intervene- a little heavy-handedly and with threats attached- in the internal affairs of our nation by telling us he'd like us to stay in the European Union where he and his masters can keep better tabs on us

Serves us right, I suppose, for having once presumed to be a great Imperial power. The wheel turns and now we ourselves are imperial subjects. We used to be the boss, now we get bossed; it's what happens...

On dune and headland sinks our fire.

Can't say I like it much...

If it's any comfort, Chez Blanchard is of the opinion that we are witnessing the waning days of the American Empire. Seen through that lens, it's one has-been telling another has-been what to do.

I think you're right. Empires have a limited shelf life. There's no reason why yours should last any longer than ours.
