This handsome example is in the grounds of Chiddingstone Castle, Kent.

Fact: the pillar box was introduced into Britain by Post Office official (and part-time novelist) Anthony Trollope.

This is what I hear whenever I read "pillar box."

They're a part of the furniture of every day life over here and you're never far from the nearest one- so one rather takes them for granted. It's just the original Victorian ones- with the VR monogram- that are uncommon.

It sits on the lawn outside the big house. I wonder if it has always been there. I don't see why not. A house like Chiddingstone Castle would probably have generated as much post as a small village.
