Victorian Pillar Box

Not many of these left now.

This handsome example is in the grounds of Chiddingstone Castle, Kent.

Fact: the pillar box was introduced into Britain by Post Office official (and part-time novelist) Anthony Trollope.

Victorian Pillar Box

This is what I hear whenever I read "pillar box."

Listen when you post a letter and you'll hear a muffled sob
For he longs for something better than a letter down his gob
It's cruel to dishearten little pillar boxes so
But no one tries to start an R.S.P.C.G.P.O.

They're a part of the furniture of every day life over here and you're never far from the nearest one- so one rather takes them for granted. It's just the original Victorian ones- with the VR monogram- that are uncommon.

That's a beauty!

It sits on the lawn outside the big house. I wonder if it has always been there. I don't see why not. A house like Chiddingstone Castle would probably have generated as much post as a small village.

It's lovely and I've been privileged to see one or two though you're right. There aren't many left at all.

The Victorians had panache.
