Ooh! Fab! Haven't seen these for ages.

Chatham Dockyard also has a fine collection.

The Town itself's not much but the dockyard and Fort Amherst are well worth your attention.

So's the Royal Engineers' Museum up the hill in Brompton.

If you're going to be in the area, yell- we really should meet up some time. :o)

The first one looks so sad, should she have been guiding a ship? But I love the bottom one!

The bottom one is very- even startlingly- lifelike.

I wonder if she was the ship captain's wife? It does look very much like a portrait of a real person.

Wife or sweetheart- or even daughter. I agree, I think it's a portrait.

I saw her as apprehensive, but it provoked the same question: would you want to sail with someone who just knows it is all going to go terribly wrong?

That was my thought too! Especially when sailors are supposed to be so superstitious, who would want such a sad figurehead?
