The Town itself's not much but the dockyard and Fort Amherst are well worth your attention.
So's the Royal Engineers' Museum up the hill in Brompton.
If you're going to be in the area, yell- we really should meet up some time. :o)

I saw her as apprehensive, but it provoked the same question: would you want to sail with someone who just knows it is all going to go terribly wrong?

That was my thought too! Especially when sailors are supposed to be so superstitious, who would want such a sad figurehead?
