Well, no-one knows quite what happened next but the dossier is now lost. One could speculate, but then the libel laws would kick in.  Simon Danziuck MP- who has written a book about Cyril Smith (one of the perps- and one we can talk about because he's dead) is pushing for full disclosure and there's growing pressure for a public enquiry, though Nick Clegg- who is a protege of Brittan's- says he can't see why...

There are all sorts of theories as to who is being protected here. Of course, the list of alleged Elm House "guests" is all over the internet and includes politicians, entertainers and members of the Royal Household. There are also lurid stories of people, who knew too much, ending up dead. Some of the allegedly abused boys are also said to have disappeared in an alarming way.

Dickens' dossier was reported to contain 40 pages. That's not immense. I'm guessing that it could be reconstructed easily by talking to a couple of social workers who have already spoken about the case, and some of the care home boys who are now grown up and have spoken about it. I also know who I'd put in charge of such a dossier if it were down to me: Keir Starmer, the former DPP.

Like all of these cases, the passage of time makes evidence harder to retrieve, but it seems that there would also be some powerful testimonies in court.

It's the political establishment that's being protected. The bad eggs are not particularly important but they have friends who are. An awful lot of people will have known the facts and chosen to look the other way. This will rock Westminster the way Savile has rocked the BBC.
