My parents loved being racehorse owners and breeders- and in the early days they had success as well as fun. Then my father died and the Company lost its business brain. Now its just a machine for losing money. The AGM met today (I'm not on the board- my father wouldn't have me because I'm a feckless hippie) and the decision was taken to sell or give away the foal that is one of the three remaining assets/expenses. It's the right decision- and what I wanted- but I'm not jumping up and down for joy- because I can't forget that what we're dismantling here- this sad, embarrassing, unloved thing- was once my parents' darling.

Change, even when it's for the better, is always a wrench. I imagine this is difficult for your mother. A horse put down and another sold up all within a short time.

Yes, but it's not clear how much she understands of any of it.

My mother hasn't watched any racing since the horse died. I'm not sure how much she knows- or cares- about it all. We were talking about the dead horse yesterday and I found I knew more about it than she did.
