You knew Ed Miliband's father Ralph was a Marxist, right? Well you would have done if you took any interest in these matters. It wasn't exactly a secret. He published books. He wrote articles.

BUT

Hold onto your hats because the Mail is now able to reveal that- you're not going to believe this- Ralph Miliband was a Marxist!

And apparently being a Marxist is the same as "hating Britain". Well, here's the evidence: he thought the class system was wicked and that people got into power through the old boy's network of the public schools and Oxbridge. What a vicious twisting of the truth!  I mean it's obvious that people like Cameron (and Ralph's two sons) get to the top by intrinsic merit and sheer hard graft.  O the humanity!

Dig him up and burn what's left and throw the ashes in the Thames.

Well, I'll go to the foot of our stairs! Fancy that! A Marxist. Quelle horreur!

My grandad was also a Marxist, a collier and good union man and his granddaughter is a historian, a left Socialist and good union woman of whom, I hope, he'd have approved.

My grandad, Arthur Seymour Snape was being that in the hard times while the Daily Mail was supporting Hitler and the Nazis- something for which they outright refuse to apologise.....................

Give me an honest Marxist any day of the week!

I don't know if you've read the original article- but it's weird. It lists all these things that are to Miliband Sr's credit- like hating injustice, and fighting the Nazis and refusing to condone the Stalinist invasion of Hungary- all under the heading "the man who hated Britain". It left me wondering whether the journalist was taking the piss out of his editor. Anyone who read the article- as opposed to just the headline- would be likely to conclude that Miliband Sr was actually a pretty decent and principled bloke.

Unlike the Mail- I haven't forgotten how they drove a trans woman to her death a few months ago.

http://cmcmck.livejournal.com/294715.html

Something else they haven't apologised for.

That rag is a disgrace to decency and humanity and the fact that anyone reads it leaves me pretty depressed as to some people's attitudes towards society as a whole.

Exactly. I love my country, but I don't love its government or its class system or- oh- heaps of things.

Oh that's been coming for some time. Belgium has been disinventing itself since the seventies.

Such a shame- it's what you get when the extremist politicos on each side of the language line are given a free hand to tinker with the buzzsaw of racial and ethnic identity. :o(

Comin over 'ere takin' all our jobs an' all our benefits!

That one has always puzzled me, I must admit. Good trick, that!

But it sez so in the Daily Mail so it must be true, innit?

I haven't read the original Mail article, but I read the BBC article about it.

I noticed that Milliband refuses to say whether he thinks the free market economy is a good thing -- and apparently this makes him as evil as his father! Personally I have lots of reservations about the free market economy, but that doesn't mean I hate Britain. One does not follow from the other.

A free market is a great thing - if it is properly regulated to prevent abuse by companies / shareholders. People don't generally realise that a "free market" is a technical economic term (as is "public good") and doesn't mean "everybody do what ever you like".

I think it's pretty feeble of him not to be able to give an account of his economic philosophy. He's had long enough to come up with one.

I find Milliband pretty feeble as a politician and extremely so as any sort of socialist but that's still no excuse for the Fail to be doing what its doing- it looks awfully like some of its pro Nazi Communist baiting propaganda from the thirties!

Fight the man on his policies (or lack of them) by all means, but personal attacks of this sort are not impressive.

Britain: still a country where second-generation Jewish immigrants have to watch their step for fear of vilification by the right-wing press.

I have always maintained that a good deal of the crap thrown at Ed Miliband is anti-semitic, and this goes a long way to supporting my view.

I'm glad I'm not the only one seeing it that way!

My own Jewish ancestor, my maternal great grandma, got out of Riga one step ahead of Russian government sponsored pogroms in the 19th century.

I think you're right. No-one dares come straight out and call him a filthy Jew but there's always that under-current.

The current is very pro-Israel, employ more Jewish and other minority ethnic journalists (and non public-school educated journos) than the Guardian, Indy and Observer combined.

It's also unlikely that there would have been a Stephen Lawrence enquiry if it hadn't been for the DM.

I'm playing devil's advocate of course, and much of their content is vile. It's just differently vile from and more vile than the others, but no more hypocritical.

There are things I like about the Mail.

They have great picture galleries.

They employ Peter Hitchens- whose Sunday column I always make a point of reading.

I use it a lot in class. The articles are long, and, in terms of grammar, syntax, structure and vocabulary, very well written (alas, the same cannot be said for any of the broadsheets these days). But we do also look at the nature and purpose of the whole paper.

When I lived in Elephant & Castle I was always struck by the queues of minority ethnic women buying it. A friend with me once asked why on earth immigrant women would be buying a racist, anti-immigrant paper. I pointed out that most of them weren't immigrants; they were the second or third generation of their family to be born here, and often are more vehemently anti-immigrant than anyone else.

I buy all sorts of crap publications for the freebies stuck to the front, too.
