You knew Ed Miliband's father Ralph was a Marxist, right? Well you would have done if you took any interest in these matters. It wasn't exactly a secret. He published books. He wrote articles.

BUT

Hold onto your hats because the Mail is now able to reveal that- you're not going to believe this- Ralph Miliband was a Marxist!

And apparently being a Marxist is the same as "hating Britain". Well, here's the evidence: he thought the class system was wicked and that people got into power through the old boy's network of the public schools and Oxbridge. What a vicious twisting of the truth!  I mean it's obvious that people like Cameron (and Ralph's two sons) get to the top by intrinsic merit and sheer hard graft.  O the humanity!

Dig him up and burn what's left and throw the ashes in the Thames.

I think you're right. No-one dares come straight out and call him a filthy Jew but there's always that under-current.

The current is very pro-Israel, employ more Jewish and other minority ethnic journalists (and non public-school educated journos) than the Guardian, Indy and Observer combined.

It's also unlikely that there would have been a Stephen Lawrence enquiry if it hadn't been for the DM.

I'm playing devil's advocate of course, and much of their content is vile. It's just differently vile from and more vile than the others, but no more hypocritical.

There are things I like about the Mail.

They have great picture galleries.

They employ Peter Hitchens- whose Sunday column I always make a point of reading.

I use it a lot in class. The articles are long, and, in terms of grammar, syntax, structure and vocabulary, very well written (alas, the same cannot be said for any of the broadsheets these days). But we do also look at the nature and purpose of the whole paper.

When I lived in Elephant & Castle I was always struck by the queues of minority ethnic women buying it. A friend with me once asked why on earth immigrant women would be buying a racist, anti-immigrant paper. I pointed out that most of them weren't immigrants; they were the second or third generation of their family to be born here, and often are more vehemently anti-immigrant than anyone else.

I buy all sorts of crap publications for the freebies stuck to the front, too.
