Yesterday was sunny. I got to hang clothes outside- and have them dry (for only the second time this year) and sit outside myself with a book. I'm reading Pure, White and Deadly- which is all about the evils of sugar. Ailz passed it down to me. She reads a lot about nutrition.

Sugar is nutritionally useless and makes us ill- tooth decay, obesity, diabetes, heart disease- and we all eat vast amounts of it. I knew this, of course, but it's good to have chapter and verse. I don't take a lot of sugar (I don't have a sweet tooth) but it's hard to avoid it entirely because manufacturers add it to everything- including, unfeasibly, tinned vegetables. Henceforward I'm going to be more aware and more discriminating.

We don't buy tinned (canned) vegetables because of all the additives. We prefer frozen if we can't get fresh -- and, in some ways, frozen is better than fresh. Veggies are frozen within hours of harvesting. "Fresh" may have spent a couple weeks in a refrigerated rail car coming East from California.

I eat very little prepared food, so my sugar intake is probably lower than most.

I rather like tinned veg. I prefer it to frozen. But mostly we eat fresh. I don't propose to give up baked beans.

I find prepared food disagrees with me- which could be because of the sugar levels- so I eat very little. I used to buy a lot of ready-made curries; now I make my own.

I haven't made actual baked beans (either from scratch or from a can) for ages. I make a lot of cajun / southwestern bean and rice dishes, but sugar isn't an ingredient.

I eat a lot of cheap canned beans- having first spiced them up with Lea and Perrins Worcestershire sauce.

Dried beans that you cook yourself are even cheaper. I usually cook a couple pounds at once and freeze the extras.
