What's the point of newspapers if they don't give you the news? Increasingly I find I'm turning to the Internet to learn what's really going on- as opposed to what the mouthpieces of the rich and powerful would like us to believe is going on.

Take the Savile affair. There's a mass of information out there that the papers won't publish. The name of the top Tory child abuser is only a click away.

I know I'm being very dim, but I haven't been able to find that click! I've googled a few relevant words (or so it seemed to me), only to get a lot of pages telling me that Newsnight refused to reveal it. To begin with I was only mildly curious ina work-displacement kind of way, but now I'm frustrated!

As one of my friends pointed out yesterday there's a very jolly Irish folk song about navvies called McAlpine's Fusiliers.

Thank you, sir. We're seeing the same thing.

Oh, how I want to see this one go boom! So many scores to settle on so many levels and the Servant is a good place to start.

Too bad you can't display their heads on Tower Bridge, anymore.

I don't see how they can keep the lid on this time. The pressure is too great. Maybe they'll throw someone to the wolves and hope that slows down the pursuers.

That, I fear, might only make things worse. Blood in the water, that sort of thing. Any act of desperation is an admission of weakness.

Is it wrong to mix metaphors with the post to which one replies, I wonder?

Perhaps you need to know the name- or suspect it- in order to find the info.

I suggest you might want to listen to an Irish folk tune- recorded by the Dubliners and others- called McAlpine's Fusiliers.

Still not clear if Welsh accusation is about same person as English accusation

There are several scandals pending. A large number of care homes in different parts of the UK were used as brothels by the rich and powerful.

As I write there's a story being reported on the BBC local news about new allegations of child abuse in care homes in Lancashire and Liverpool.

About 20 politicians- both Labour and Conservative- are being named as paedophiles on the Net. Some allegations are more plausible (and better attested) than others.

Back in 2001, after the horror of 9/11, the cable news came on 24 hrs a day, and at first, I thought, wow, this is great. But then cable news in America degenerated with warp speed into propaganda machines spewing forth whatever side they were on -- but most egregiously Fox News a.k.a. Faux News -- whose motto, "fair and impartial" is the sickest example of in-your-face -- "oh yeah? So what are you gonna do about it?"

I truly empathize with what you said about the mass information full of the "sound and the fury" and signifying nothing in the end.

The BBC News is supposed to be impartial, which means it relays the official version of everything. The standards of journalism are lamentable.

Here in the U.S., I use the BBC to get a version of news that is not American Corporate. I have become VERY frustrated at the fact that one cannot just get "news" anymore. The choice has become, "Do you want the Liberal version of the news? Or the Conservative version?" After 9/11, I mistakenly thought that CNN was "just news". Plus, I liked them because they were fast. Now I realize that the reason they were fast is that they would make things up to get it up there first, and they are almost as bad as Fox.

I'm told that Al_Jazeera is fairly reliable.

I like Channel 4 News. They pursue issues in some depth, but I don't suppose they're obtainable in the States.

You're right, of course. Initial speculation had Brittan in the frame, but the Dubliners guy was always a possibility. I guess Brittan can rest easy for now.

Apparently with Brittan there was an incident- or an alleged incident. With Gordon Brown there doesn't seem to be any evidence at all.

Mind you there was something going on around Dunblane that the Labour high-ups don't want us to know about.
