He was something. I remember the debates between Mr. Vidal and Mr. Buckley, and how they often descended into physical violence...but we all learned new words and the art of insult was greatly elevated.

There's a difference though. Buckley was an American celebrity, with little reputation abroad; Gore Vidal was a figure of world stature.
