Waiting

We went to collect a prescription for Eric. We were advised it was for a specialised end-of-life drug we'd probably only find at the big pharmacy in the Integrated Care Centre by the Bus Station. There's no parking or waiting outside. Ailz drove round the block three times while I got it filled.

I spent the afternoon in the garden at Dot and Eric's. I looked at the greenery, I slept, I flipped through a Reader's Digest book which left me feeling queasy.  The Readers Digest is to literature what MacDonalds is to nutrition.

Is R.D still a far right outpost with "Increase your Word Power" at the front, numerous Washington friendly articles in the middle and an abridged novel/story at the back? You Pinko Commie!!

I haven't seen a copy of the magazine for ages. I don't suppose they've changed the formula.

I liked "Increase your Word Power". It used to make me feel really brainy.

I have early memories of Reader's Digest. They are not pleasant. It is indeed rather like fast food, except that I'm tempted to say that eating isn't all that important and the perverse liberties taken with food do not necessarily concern me, so long as I don't have to eat the stuff myself.

Burgers and fries do not degrade society and the public discourse. The ersatz literacy and pseudo-intellectualism represented by RD most assuredly does.

My grandad took the RD- so there were always copies around. I liked it as a kid- and to be honest, I learned a lot of stuff from it. For example, it introduced me to Houdini. Later, I started having doubts...

I used to collect Readers' Digests at jumble sales when I was about 9. When our GP saw a pile by my bed, she asked "Does she really read those?" "Oh yes" said my mother proudly. I don't think that she ever realized that the GP probably meant that I'd be better off reading something else -
