Human Remains

I declared a bit back that this is a Golden Age of British Comedy.

And currawong asked if I'd seen Human Remains.

I hadn't then, but I have now. Human Remains is bloody marvellous. It's top of the heap. It's the best.

Well, maybe not better than The Office, but on a par.

It hasn't had the exposure of The Office or Little Britain. I don't know why. As the poet Gray so memorably put it.

Full many a flower is born to blush unseen
And waste its sweetness on the desert air.

Actually Human Remains isn't so much blushing unseen as out on DVD, but you know what I mean. It hasn't been hymned. It's not a Big Cult; it's a small cult. If Little Britain is the Jehovah's Witnesses, then Human Remains is the Plymouth Brethren.

Six half hour "documentaries" about six ghastly couples. That's what you get. Think Hogarth, think Dickens, think Peter Sellers.

Rob Bryden and Julia Davis have gone onto other things. They are the titanic comedy gods of the future. They will be very, very famous.

Jump onto the bandwagon now.

Not even the Office?

The BBC puts all these shows out on DVD/video. I wonder if they'd be available to you that way?
