No Smoke Without Fire

If you microwave a croissant instead of grilling it the room will fill with acrid smoke

And if you put your fingerless gloves down on top of a toaster you've just switched on...

Ailz did the first and I did the second.

Silly old fools.

The first time I ever used a microwave (in a holiday cabin in Shetland which belonged to the people who ran the electrical goods shop, and so had all the latest toys but no instructions) we had to guess at how long it would take to warm the croissants. And overestimated, so they were toasted in the middle - the outside seemed barely affected, but there was a hard centre of toasty honeycomb.

Yes, that's how they go.

We've made this mistake several times. It's not difficult when you're using a cooker that's also a microwave.

I think the trick (at least, if one can extrapolate from experience with pains au chocolat) is only to use the microwave for a very short time. 10 seconds is ample.

Yes.

But really you're better off using the grill. You need pastries to be crisp and flaky on the outside- and a microwave- even if used very briefly- turns them limp and soggy.

This is why I decided against a combination - knew that I'd keep doing this - so I've got a microwave and a tabletop grill

Very sensible.

Hope you didn't damage the toaster.

Fortunately not. The smell of burning wool alerted me in time.

Scary.

I've been microwaving garlic lately and I've noticed they tend to go off like small firecrackers sometimes. I see little flashes of light and popping sounds that result in little burnt pieces of garlic, but I keep doing it.

I think I'd like to try that.
