And if you put your fingerless gloves down on top of a toaster you've just switched on...

The first time I ever used a microwave (in a holiday cabin in Shetland which belonged to the people who ran the electrical goods shop, and so had all the latest toys but no instructions) we had to guess at how long it would take to warm the croissants. And overestimated, so they were toasted in the middle - the outside seemed barely affected, but there was a hard centre of toasty honeycomb.

Yes, that's how they go.

We've made this mistake several times. It's not difficult when you're using a cooker that's also a microwave.
