Non!

On the one hand I believe it's good the nations of Europe are coming together (right now, over me) and on the other I resent the Germans behaving so Germanically, so if you ask me what I think about David Cameron's "No" to the new European treaty, I'd have to say "Um, er..."  I've been to the cupboard and grubbed around for opinions-  and the cupboard is bare.

Well almost- I did find this- this small, weevily biscuit: "He did it for the bankers!" Make of it what you will. Maybe it's a good thing he did it for the bankers, Maybe not. I haven't a clue. I just know that the next time he bashes their bonuses (but only with his mouth) I shall smile a small, secret smile.

I like the allusion to the Beatles! Camergoon is "either very smart or bloody stupid" (copyright Group Captain Hinksley-Ellis, Java POW camp 1942).

I've read the papers this morning.

The Telegraph hails a new dawn, the Guardian and the Indy think we're fucked. Does anybody really know? Of course not.

Too early to tell but myopic to think Uncle Sam is going to give us Puerto Rican status. Brussels is about to do a Pontius Pilate on Whitehall. Laugh or cry? You decide!

Like you, I have no opinion as I do not have enough information on which to base one. I think that avoiding regulating and taxing the banks is an evil thing to do, and that much seems straightforward to me. The rest is a Gordian knot, and the knives to hand seem to me dull.

They keep telling us we can't get tough with the banks because they're our main wealth creators. I don't believe them, but I don't have the ammunition to fight the case.

I'm firmly in your camp on this issue.

I think the Europe that wants monetary unity has finally cut free of whatever the current opinion is in the UK. As for how it will affect the UK...you're right. Who knows?
Another government could come in and do an about face.

Anything could happen. One possibility is that this decision will break the coalition- and we'll have an early election.

I wonder - commentators don't seem to be giving very solid opinions yet. It seems the right wing tories will be baying for more anti-euro goodies from Cameron, though....

The more triumphalist the Tory right becomes the more likely it is that the Lib Dems will pick up their toys and go home.

Thank you.

I'm curious whether people are starting to regret forming the EU, or whether it's still seen as well worth it? Do the pros still outweigh the cons?

I'm afraid I'm out of my depth. I've always supported the EU on the grounds that it has rendered large scale European war unthinkable, but I'm beginning to wonder whether it has outlived its usefulness.
