David Hare has been famous for so long he probably doesn't know anybody who isn't of Bill Nighy's order of famousness.

Possibly.

On the other hand when I watched his movie last night I was absolutely wanting to cheer for it. I thought he was going to give us some truth.  What we got was warmed over le Carre- spiced with zingy dialogue- enacted by Hare's famous mates the cream of the British acting profession. You know what? Ralph Fiennes is even scarier when he's wearing a nose.

It was there, I suppose. I never went looking for it. I seem vaguely to remember people going boating on "The Ladywell"- so there must have been a pond or a stream...

I can find nothing on the spring itself, other than that Lancing claims that it is of pre-Christian significance. It feeds the Ladywell Stream, which joins the Adur at Cuckoo's Corner -- isn't the Internet something? It warranted an entry at megalithic.co.uk, but the compiler there hasn't seen it either and had no details.

I was a bit underwhelmed with "Page Eight", but there isn't all that much on at the moment to watch. I'm afraid that Bill Nighy does nothing for me and I do get very tired of the young attractive woman falls for wrinkly old man trope. However, there were occasional moments of sharp dialogue and I managed not to fall asleep, even though I'd worked hard in the morning pulling up Himalayan Balsam plants.

It does happen. Fertility is a powerful weapon and men can afford to keep their powder dry.

It's more the case that money and power (often possesed by old men) are a powerful aphrodisiac -- or at least a decent trade for beauty and fertility. You don't often see elderly men on state benefits with a sexy young woman on their arm. :)

However I would imagine that an old woman with money and power will have a harder time than even her broke elderly male counterpart. Men don't have to trade in fertility for anything, even the quality of their sperm is compromised.

Some pretty nasty comments about her in the Guardian recently, now I admit she is a pain in the arse, but they made implications about her husband's sexuality which seemed to state quite clearly that the idea of Joan Collins being desired for herself, in her own right, was so absurd as to be laughable.

And that's the Guardian, who are so left wing but who sometimes end up making the Daily Mail looking like Che Guevara.

I missed 20 minutes when I took in a episode of "Family Guy". Saskia Reeves good as bitch Hom Sec (thankfully sans faux cockney accent in the dire "Luther") and Alice Krige good. So was it "good Palestinians, bad Israelis)? Bet that made Rachel Weisz wince, or vinzce, yes, nice film, Fiennes as sub-Blair, dash of Camergoon, MI6 bunch of onanists, Yanks bad (well not all) and Mr N walking off to fly into exile 9/10.

Actually just to wade in here for a second, when I was 23, I was madly in love with a man old enough to be my father (there was a 35-year age difference). Yes, he WAS famous, but I found that to be a negative thing as it meant lots of women were after him. We were together 3 years and I left because of that. And no, although he had money, he didn't throw it around and I wasn't there for the money. I worked, looked after my own bills and was still totally besotted by the man.

But I do agree when older women start pulling the young men, there's definitely a lot of nasty things said and it sure doesn't happen a lot at the cinema and on TV (without it being done as a joke).

It's a commonly held belief that academia is not the real world, so I suppose in that sense you may be right, but I'm not so sure. A cynical friend says that men's stock-in-trade is power, while women's is pulchritude. There's something to be said for that. When I was working in an MBA program for medical professionals, many of the doctors where a head shorter and at least 20 years older than their (second) wives, and the image of the older, horsefaced politician/director/plutocrat squiring around the latest in a string of supermodels is a chestnut for a reason. I will freely grant you that it kinda sucks to be a man without much power or a woman without much looks, but I think, up to a point, this is also reality.
