Hey, so we're not going to have Ashcroft to kick around any more.

It seems to be obligatory to describe him as the lightning rod of the Bush administration- an odd image that calls up visions of Dr Frankenstein's laboratory. Don't worry, I'm not going to pursue that idea any further.

When he wasn't scaring the bejayzus out of wimpish liberals like myself, he was jolly good fun. Remember the anointing with cooking oil? Remember the draping of the bare-breasted statue of Justice? Remember "Let the Eagle Soar"?

So what rough beast is going to slouch into that office next?

But it's a pleasant reminder that no politician is forever.

Only four more years......

And this:

Senator Orrin Hatch is trying to clear the way for Arnold Schwarzenegger, the Austrian-born movie star, to run for President in 2008. Hatch wants to change to constitution so that people born in other countries can be President if they've lived here for, say, 20 years.

I hope the Republicans do run Arnold. Then Hilliary will win.

I've always thought Arnie was a totally disgusting human being.

I hated those muscle man movies he made in the 80s. Him and Sly Stallone.

But if his candidacy opens the way for Hillary I'm all for it.

I wouldn't vote for her. I doubt she'd make it past the primary. Edwards/Obama!

Obama yes, but I don't find Edwards all that impressive. I think he's smarmy.

Huh. I find him genuine, what little I've seen of him. And he speaks well, and with guts.

Now there's a thought.

He is a nightmare, and I am sure there will be more changes in the cabinet. Powell? Rumsfeld? RIce? Let's see what they do, and who comes in!

Powell is heavily tipped to step down. What a pity: the man who could have been the first black president but lacked the nerve to go for it.

As for Condie I understand she's hoping for promotion. Maybe she'll get Powell's job.

Powell said his family was afraid of violence. There had been threats. That's why he didn't run for President, he said.

And so he's been working for Dubya instead- and often against his own conscience by all accounts. I guess he'll go down to history as one of the great might-have-beens.

I wonder if he has regrets. I bet he does.

Suppose it's true, that Ashcroft could end up on the Supreme Court?

God help us all, here in Cartoon Land.

Yeah, now he's eligible for a judicial appointment. Can you say "Supremes"?

the scuttlebutt is that Ashcroft is resigning so when Rhenquist steps down or dies, he can be appointed to the Supreme Court (not as Chief Justice, of course, that would probably either go to O'Connor or Scalia)

OMG--Ashcroft on the Supreme Court?
That's a horror story I hadn't heard yet.

So we may have him to kick around some more.

Heigh-ho.

I am a JA1; he was governor when I was a college professor in Missouri.

I sometimes feel like he's following me around.

Not happy

Bush nominated Alberto Gonzales as Ashcroft's replacement, I don't know what to say, isn't this the guy who thinks the Geneva Convention is obsolete?
