This is the book that turned me on to Wells- only for some reason I didn't follow up for 40 years. It's as good as I remember- an impassioned novel about politics and love- and the relative values thereof. Wells is one of those rare novelists (Tolstoy, Dostoevsky, Rand, Murdoch) who write not only about ideas but about people for whom ideas matter.

Have you tried David Lodge's A Man of Parts yet? I couldn't finish it, because it was Lodge, after all, but I'd be interested to hear what you think of his take on Wells.

I haven't, but perhaps I should. I feel I know Wells quite well by now- and like him; he was a decent sort of a cove, I think.
