We cut Fabi's hair yesterday. I say "we", but I chickened out because he was screaming and wriggling so much it seemed like child abuse. Odi and Ailz persevered. They were remorseless. Women are.

I loathed having my hair cut when I was a kid (still do, actually). I remember being taken to the barbers when I was a cocky eight year old and giving my little sister- who was watching- a running commentary about how much it hurt. (Of course it didn't). The barber must have hated me.

Ailz says she once had her hair cut by Vidal Sassoon, who- implausibly- began his great career in Stockport. He- or his assistant- gave her a Bowie cut.

In the future Dystopia of H.G. Wells's The Sleeper Awakes, hairdressers- known as capillotomists- are regarded as artists. Like many of the book's predictions this one's not too far off the mark, I think.

I rather enjoy having someone fuss over my hair but then we remorseless women often do.

I hate being fussed over. A weekend at a health spar would be pure unalloyed misery.

I always loved getting a haircut when I was a little kid ... my dad would take me to the barber shop that he went to, and it made me feel like a grown-up man.

Nowadays, though, getting a haircut is just a pain in the butt. :)

For a long time now I've had my hair cut at home. A brief going over with a electric razor and the job's done.

I have a certain sneaking affection for the old time barber's shop. Those places had atmosphere.

I love having my hair washed and messed around with - I am useless at doing it, so until my 40's tended to have it very short. While my sister hates it, and can yet always had long hair and could/can faffy with it.

My daughter took my grandson, William, for his cut the other day- he's nearly 3, he hates it being cut and it took the hairdresser nearly an hour to sort it out.

I wish she would just leave it let it grow... he has the most beautiful blonde hair. I love little boys with long hair, I fought tooth and nail to keep my son's** longer that just the razor across the head sadly her father has more influence than me, and he persuaded her that boys need short hair!

**my son now shaves his off...*laughs**

Kids don't like having their hair cut. I'm not sure why. Perhaps it's because they don't like having to sit still. Perhaps they experience it as assault.

I've worn my hair in all sorts of ways. I've had it shoulder length, I've had it close cropped. Once upon a time my father cut it. Now my wife does. It's a long time since I last went to the barber's.

I remember my first haircut rather well. The barber's name was Gene Trainer. I thoroughly enjoyed the experience.

Going to a full-service barber shop every week or so, when I was in the NROTC, is something I remember quite fondly. The ritualized courtesy, the idle banter, a shave with hot lather and straight razor, the smell of Bay Rum on old men with old money: it was a richly sensuous experience, one that I doubt finds much place in the hectic world of today.
