Those who were supposed to know about these things assured us the Arabs weren't interested in democracy.

Those who were supposed to know about these things assured us nuclear energy was entirely safe.

The evidence all points to one simple conclusion:

Never trust an expert- especially when he's voicing opinions that serve the interests of power.

Most of the time when they assure us of this, that or the other they really have no idea whether or not they're telling the truth.

Yes...
And the in-crowd (those in the "know") was wrong -- once again!

Their "truth" is whatever suits them at the time.

Sometimes they just don't know, but are trying to sound important. Not always malicious, just self-serving.

I read an article this morning that suggested the Japanese tradition of respect for authority is likely to be a long-term casualty of the disaster.

There's a light at the end of the tunnel! The tide is about to turn! We can win the war in Viet- er, Afghanistan!

Yeah. Same lies, different contexts. They'll always say it's all fine until it becomes too clearly obvious that it's not all fine --- and even then, sometimes.

But of course. It has to be. It involves wires and flashing lights.

Never trust an expert- especially when he's voicing opinions that serve the interests of power.

Never trust ANYONE when he's voicing opinions that serve the interests of power. Or self-interest.

It will only end badly, and probably not for Power.

I commented on the earlier, more sparse version of this, but you had deleted it before I could hit, "Post Comment".

That the Arabs weren't interested in democracy was always bullshit. It was merely the necessary corollary to the equally ridiculous claim that Israel was an island of Western-style democracy in a sea of savage, Oriental despotism and must be supported at all cost.

The question now is, does the nuclear crisis in Japan force us to reaffirm our commitment to Saudi despotism? As the energy supply contracts, what remains increases in value and, consequently, the politico-economic stock of the Arabian peninsula must surely rise,
