The Electricians: Day 4

Yesterday evening they removed all the upstairs lights. There is now no corner of  the house that hasn't been trashed. Khalid lent us a couple of plug-in lights to see us through the night. Today they continued banging away upstairs, but the lights are still off at the end of the day. Khalid asks- with that sorrowful look on his face- whether the people who wired the place in 1986 were professionals, because the evidence is against it- but I've noticed that tradesmen always like to cast aspersions on their predecessors' work. 

I spent much of the morning noodling round Johann Hari's website. He's a political journalist whose views very largely correspond to mine. Odi rang in a tearful state just before lunch and we dispensed advice. I walked round to the house in the afternoon, but she wasn't there. I'd like to think she was out and about putting our advice to good use.

I'm surprised you have not mentioned Phil Woolas in your blog. I'd love to hear your comment although I gather he is appealing against the ruling - or he was considering this earlier in the day.
Sounds like the re-wiring is extremely intrusive into every corner of the house - poor you and Ailz.

Woolas is the worst kind of time-serving political hack. I'm very glad he's been deposed.

We're at the stage with the rewiring where absolutely nothing has been finished- and there are wires sprouting from the walls and ceilings in every room.

I can't think of anything worse than electrical work as it really does trash rooms and walls. It sounds like Odi and Peter are communicating again?

Actually, right at this moment they're not. They've been OK for a year or so, but the tensions seem to be driving them apart again. I've only heard Odi's side of the story, so I'm not really sure what's going on.

The rewiring job sounds awful. My condolences.

We have to rewire this place, and have known about it for years, but have made no moves in that direction. A full attic and basement, and two floors in between, and all of it must be redone. Bad as I hate to, we shall have to make a start soon, else we shall be too old to do the work and too old to enjoy it when we finish.

Rewiring is so invasive. They've taken up the floors, they've ripped open the walls. When they've finished we'll have to redecorate.

One way of looking at it is as an opportunity to declutter.
