Told By An Idiot: Rose Macaulay

Told By An Idiot is a survey of the fads, fancies and follies of the period 1879-1923, lightly disguised as a family chronicle. Its rolling structure reminds me of Woolf's The Waves. It also shares something of that book's lyricism and melancholy. The differences are that Woolf is only really concerned with the inner life and Told By An idiot is funny.

I remember that - and I think that I've got a copy somewhere - not all my books are unpacked yet, and I keep having horrible moments of regret about whetehr and what I gave away before moving

I was given a Rose Macaulay book by Grandpa. I think it was a present for achieving something rather than just a birthday. Could it have been The Tower of Trebizond or some such title? Curious that you are now interested in her books. I suppose Grandpa had read at least one of her books...and therefore felt it would be interesting reading for me.

Towers of Trebizond is her most famous book. Also her last. It came out in the mid 50s.

I suppose Grandpa might have enjoyed her work. She's very interested in religion- in a detached, uncommitted sort of a way- as was he. She's also very funny.
