It's the party conference season. We've had the Lib Dems and Labour and now it's the Tories' turn. Michael Howard was just delivering his keynote speech. He wants to withdraw from the 1951 treaty on refugees and severely prune immigration. And then, as a sentimental coda, he told us how his grandmother died in Auschwitz and how he'd have died there too if Winston Churchill hadn't let his family in.

I don't get his thinking here; I really don't.

Made no sense, did it? The only logical basis for his speech would be that we should only accept immigrants who would be useful members of society, e.g. parents of Tory party leaders of the future. But to actually say so would be to expose himself to the question of how to do it. So it must just have been an anti-immigration rant for the Daily Mail reading tendency, and a separate personal appeal to the hardworkingfamilies vote. Easy to say it's just a soundbite, but soundbites are what's important.

On the bright side, UKIP losing its sponsorship money might push the Tories off the top news slot - I'll be watching at 10:00 to find out. And of course we will see Bournemouth Pier behind Andrew Marr's head, always a pleasure.

I suppose that's it. But whatever happened to "joined-up" government?

I'm afraid I won't be watching the nine o'clock news tonight. I've got a date with Ian McShane in Deadwood.:)
