I don't like Graham Greene- too angsty, too catholic, too self-conscious (also dull)- but I admire him.

Sometimes I call myself a writer. Well hush my mouth. I'm a dilettante, a dabbler. To produce book after book after book and then when inspiration fails to go crawling all over the globe in search of untold stories- that's being a writer!

Happy 100th birthday, Graham!

I read Our Man in Havana when I was home sick one day this summer and I rather enjoyed it. I wouldn't call it Great Literature but it was nice and breezy enough. One of those books you read when you really want to read something brainless and trashy, but are too much of a snob to allow that sort of stuff in your house.

I read Ministry of Fear once. That's trashy and breezy. And I like some of his film work- The Third Man especially. But I've always found his "serious" novels turgid and humourless and weighed down by their own importance.
