Blood Tests

It was misty first thing. We got up around seven, had breakfast, and reached the Integrated Care Centre (the big new tower next to the bus station)  before things got busy.  A screen in the corner of the waiting room played cartoons with the sound turned off.  I watched Goofy negotiate the morning rush hour and Inspector Clouseau being teased by The Pink Panther. There was a lot of binging and bonging- the sound of machines (the lift, the automated front door) doing their thing, then bragging about it.

A notice- which looked like a fixture- said, waiting time- one hour. It didn't mean it- but I suppose they have it there to cover their backs. The baby in the carry cot which arrived after us was seen ahead of us, but that's fair enough. I suppose we were sitting for about ten minutes.

While the nurse filled her four colour-coded tubes with Ailz's blood I turned sideways in my chair and studied the bits and pieces she had pasted to the back of the door. There were cut-outs of Spiderman, a game where you count animals- from one ape to ten jellyfish- and a set of rhymes- including this one- which I remember from when my kids were small-

When all the cows are sleeping
And the sun has gone to bed
Up popped a scarecrow
And this is what he said,
"I'm a dingle-dangle scarecrow
With a flippy-floopy hat.
I can wave my hands like this.
I can shake my feet like that."

Gosh, I'd forgotten all about that rhyme! I've always found it rather sinister.

It is, isn't it!

Scarecrows are scary. Do you remember Dr Syn?
