The Lady Chapel

King Herod and the massacre of the innocents, over the north door of the Lady Chapel

The Abbey church looking east

The Abbot's kitchen- the only building on site to remain intact. It was used for a time as a Quaker Meeting House.

I had quite an experience near the Abbot's kitchen when I was there in 1995. Glastonbury was busy being all New Age-y and stuff and it was bustling and noisy, but I was wandering around looking at the ruins, got very close to the kitchens and all of a sudden, everything went extremely quiet and stayed that way until I moved back towards the entrance way. Didn't care for the town in general, loved the ruins.

The ruins are the heart of Glastonbury, I think. There's something very real there.

The town is fun- if you like that sort of thing, which I do- only you mustn't take it too seriously.

Lovely piccies!!

Just as well I don't need to post any Glastonbury pics... Yours knock mine for six!

Loved the carvings round the Romanesque doorway.

Ah, Glastonbury Abbey. Wasn't really struck on the town (give me Wells, anyday), but I did love the abbey.

And I felt terribly sorry for the last abbot...

Thanks.

Glastonbury is odd. The town- away from the Abbey and High Street is utterly nondescript- or seems so.

Wells is lovely. We usually visit when we're down that way, but on this occasion time was short.

The destruction of the Abbey and the execution of Richard Whiting were terrible crimes.

Richard Whiting. That's the man.

A true martyr to Henry VIII's greed and tyranny...

The Abbey and Tor are, for me, anyway, the essence of Glastonbury. I must get back there.

For me too.

We aim to visit at least once a year.
