Job's A Good'un

They still have to install a new back gate, but otherwise the work is finished.  The yard may no longer be bushy, but it's neat. When Ailz and I inspected it this morning we were happy to find there are still some stocks of ivy and honeysuckle remaining.

That looks smart! I'm sure the ivy and honeysuckle will soon grown back. They go mad here and I have to keep cutting them back.

We're pleased with what's been done.

It's a dark little yard and the creepers don't grow as fast as I'd like them to.

That was pretty quick work! It does look good, and I'm glad you're pleased with the results.

Initially they doubted if they'd get it finished before the Easter break. They've done a good job I think.

It looks nice!

[identity profile] poliphilo.livejournal.com 2010-04-01 06:11 pm (UTC)(link)
Yes. Now to add some greenery!

[identity profile] clindau.livejournal.com 2010-04-01 04:44 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh, very nice! It looks peaceful.

[identity profile] poliphilo.livejournal.com 2010-04-01 06:12 pm (UTC)(link)
Now it's so nicely paved we might well be sitting out there in summer.

[identity profile] clindau.livejournal.com 2010-04-01 07:23 pm (UTC)(link)
Yes indeed! Or take the rabbits for an outing. They would probably think they've gone to Bunny Nirvana.

[identity profile] poliphilo.livejournal.com 2010-04-01 08:33 pm (UTC)(link)
Only they'd almost certainly run and hide under the holly bushes- and we'd have the devil's own job retrieving them. :)

Nice! Although it loks like that garden wall needs a re-render to match. Hostas might do well in the shade, and Alchemilla mollis. Makes me want to go and watch Gardeners' World!

[identity profile] poliphilo.livejournal.com 2010-04-01 06:13 pm (UTC)(link)
The wall lets it down. I had that render put on 25 years ago. It was a mistake. Of course, much of it was covered in ivy until a couple of days ago.

A visit to the garden centre is indicated I think.

Oh, very nice job! Also a lovely picture of Ailz.

[identity profile] poliphilo.livejournal.com 2010-04-01 08:34 pm (UTC)(link)
Thanks. Now we need to restock our flower beds.

[identity profile] daisytells.livejournal.com 2010-04-01 07:53 pm (UTC)(link)
It looks lovely! Somebody else suggested hostas, and I second that. I'm wondering, too, if you could hang a planter or two from the wall, so as to put some flowering stuff up into the light? Neighbors here on "The Hill" do it, because we have narrow streets, four and five storey buildings, and small yards like yours. Some of the "Hidden Gardens of Beacon Hill" are quite well known, and are the focus of a mid-May event - a tour of the said gardens, for which people pay $25 USD. At any rate, a rather spectacular show is possible in these small and shady spaces.

[identity profile] poliphilo.livejournal.com 2010-04-01 08:36 pm (UTC)(link)
That's a very good idea- about the planters, I mean; I must look into it.

I'm thinking of having a go at the wall with a hammer- and getting that ugly concrete off.

A window box for the window on the right?

[identity profile] poliphilo.livejournal.com 2010-04-02 08:36 am (UTC)(link)
Perhaps. There used to be flowerpots there before the great clean-up.

[identity profile] endlessrarities.livejournal.com 2010-04-01 08:46 pm (UTC)(link)
That's quite a transformation.

Hostas do sound like a very good bet.

[identity profile] poliphilo.livejournal.com 2010-04-02 08:36 am (UTC)(link)
I need to take a trip to the garden centre.

[identity profile] pondhopper.livejournal.com 2010-04-02 12:29 am (UTC)(link)
It looks very neat indeed. Honeysuckle is hard to kill. That will surely come back. Have you thought of planting ferns and maybe impatiens, both shade lovers, though the impatiens are annuals.

[identity profile] poliphilo.livejournal.com 2010-04-02 08:38 am (UTC)(link)
The honeysuckle is OK I think. It had put down roots all over the place and some of them have survived.

Maybe we'll go to the garden centre over the Easter weekend.

[identity profile] mummm.livejournal.com 2010-04-02 08:23 am (UTC)(link)
That looks wonderful! I know that it would make me very happy.

[identity profile] poliphilo.livejournal.com 2010-04-02 08:39 am (UTC)(link)
It's an opportunity. Now I'm itching to go on a plant buying expedition.

[identity profile] michaleen.livejournal.com 2010-04-02 10:54 am (UTC)(link)
That looks realy good.

I wasn't too terribly concerned about your ivy. We have tried to kill ours for more than a decade, now, and have never succeeded. It's incredibly tough stuff.

[identity profile] poliphilo.livejournal.com 2010-04-02 08:58 pm (UTC)(link)
Like bindweed. I once had a garden full of the stuff. It was amazing how fast it grew and how deep the roots went.

[identity profile] michaleen.livejournal.com 2010-04-03 10:20 am (UTC)(link)
Tough call, I should think, bindweed vs English ivy.

[identity profile] suemars.livejournal.com 2010-04-04 12:43 pm (UTC)(link)
i love that, its really beautiful. i love the old brick.

[identity profile] poliphilo.livejournal.com 2010-04-04 04:28 pm (UTC)(link)
Me too. Our house is a hundred years old- exactly.
