Our DVD player went on the blink last night, so I disconnected it and dug out the one we were given as a "free gift" for subscribing- several years back- to The Poirot Collection, removed its polythene wrappings and hooked it up.   I'm sort of proud of myself: not only can I work the remote- and many men my age can't-  I also know where to stick the scart.

Having set up my new DVD player, I proceeded to watch Darren Aronofsky's The Fountain- which is a terrible, terrible movie- not only pretentious but stupid.

I concur- The Fountain was about the epitome of try-hard artsiness. I kept thining the duff dialogue and overwhelming ominousness of everything would cut out and it would start to rock out a little- but that nerver really happened. Odd, because Aronofosky before had been right on the money. Maybe just a little too in love with the ideas in his movie and not so concerned about rendering them intelligible and sympathetic to his viewers.

Everything about it was wrong. The writing was melodramatic, the acting was overwrought, the history was bogus, the basic situation- wealthy vivisectionist seeks cure for wife's illness- was risible. I'm amazed it got the green light.
