As so often happens on a Saturday the postman came early-  earlier than he does any other day of the week- and rang the bell and got us out of bed. Ailz says she was glad because she was having a horrible dream about how she and I were still at primary school- and she was driving us there and- well- she's forgotten the rest.

I think the box he was delivering contained quack medicine (aka vitamin supplements).

I did do some housework yesterday. I sorted the houseplants out. The line of pots along the window sill by my desk now looks intended. Also I finished reading Vile Bodies and spent some quality time with my latest jig-saw. Ailz and Ruth had a fine day- kick-starting the British economy with a visit to Boundary Park Mill in Colne. The sale prices were silly and they came back with bags and bags of designer gear. Ailz bought me some nuts.

In the evening we watched a concert from the Barbican featuring ancient, American folkies singing their greatest hits. Judy Collins has a mane of swept back, silver hair and can still hit the high notes. She was talking about hanging out with Cisco and Ramblin' Jack and the rest of the Guthrie crowd in the Village, back in the day, and how there was this scruffy young guy there she got drunk with sometimes, who she thought was kinda pathetic, called Bob Dylan.

It must have been plant tending day yesterday. It was at my house, too.
I'd have loved to have seen that concert...there were some wonderful folkies in our generation back then.

The line up was Carolyn Hester, Roger McGuin, Eric Andersen and Judy Collins- with Billy Bragg acting as compere.

I remember him back then and he WAS pretty pathetic (and also pretty much of a petty thief as well).

I'm not surprised about the petty thievery.

Talent seems to have nothing to do with character.

I sure wish I had seen that! I never cared much for Dylan's singing (if you want to call it that), but his verses - oooh Wow! Right to the point.
Pete Seeger is still my pet. I last saw Judy Collins, complete with her mane of long white hair, at a Labor Day concert in Lawrence, Massachusetts. Other years the guest of honor was Pete Seeger, Ronnie Gilbert, or Odetta, or others. It was at the annual Bread & Roses Festival, which commemorates the Strike of 1912 (originated by the women who worked in the textile mills).

I'm always amused by the contrast betwwen the cherubic face on the cover of Dylan's first album- and the voice on the record- which seems to be that of a whisky-soaked ninety year old.

Aww, I wish I'd bought a ticket for that concert now. I did think about it.

I will be seeing Tom Paxton next week - I know little about him but I enjoyed his input in the Folk America documentary and I like the tracks I've listened to through last.fm.

Oh, yes! He was one of the guest folksingers at the B&R Festival in Lawrence - one a year, a different one each year.
