Star Trek V

This is the one I hadn't seen before. The Enterprise gets hijacked by a nutty Vulcan who takes it through "The Barrier" to meet God. When God turns nasty (spoiler approaching) Spock blasts him with a space cannon. Supremely logical.

But we don't watch these things for the story, do we? We watch them for the sequences where Bones, egged on by James T, gets to taunt Spock about his green blood (The Doctor really was an appalling old racist) and Scotty gets to crawl all over the infrastructure of the Enterprise with a see-through spanner. The ideal Star Trek film would consist of nothing but schtick and banter and Spock's eyebrows going up and down.

I have the entire DVD collection of Star Trek, The Next Generation, and I don't watch them for their plots so much as to admire the fearlessness, sophistication, and elegance of Captain Picard.

He is at his best, IMHO, when he is alone in his quarters listening to string quartets and drinking tea. When some hothead rushes in with a complicated emergency, Captain Picard gently sets down his teacup or his leather-bound book and quirks his eyebrow ironically, as if to say, "I feel you are overreacting a bit. Perhaps you should calm yourself."

I've spent my life trying to be that calm during crises. I would never, ever be allowed to attend Starfleet Academy.

The entire series- that is impressive. I love Picard. My all-time favourite episode is Time's Arrow. That has me in tears every time.
