The BBC have released the cast list for their 14 part adaption of Little Dorrit. It's packed with interesting names: Ruth Jones as Flora Finching, Tom Courtenay as William Dorrit, Andy Serkis as Rigaud, Freema Agyeman as Tattycoram; yes, yes, yes, yes!  Little Dorrit is my favourite Dickens, the one I love the most. They've fallen lucky, haven't they? When they planned- a year or two back- to film this story of poverty, debt and financial ill-doings, they couldn't have known there'd be a real-life recession  to give it context.

We still haven't put the central heating on. Ailz remarks that you if you don't have the radiators flicking on and off  you soon become hardened to the cold;  I believe she's right.  She bought me these nifty, little, fingerless gloves- as worn by Dickensian eccentrics- to keep my hands warm while I type. I fully expect to see Alun Armstrong's Flyntwynch sporting a pair.

I haven't put on the heating yet, either, but I've brought out the woolly jumpers and the cardies! I generally like it when my flat is nice and cool and much prefer having to put on a jumper to having to strip down to stay cool.

Also, what's the point in owning woolly blankets if you're not going to need to cuddle up under them?

I swear by body-warmers myself.

And I've taken to wrapping myself in a fleece when I'm sitting in front of the TV.

With no little reservation, I finally lit our furnace Saturday afternoon. The weather service had issued a freeze warning for that night, so thought it better to make sure everything was in working order before the hardware store closed.

I'm sure Ailz is correct: the longer you delay turning the heat on, the better. Here, when the temperature inside finally rose to 66°F, it felt quite cozy. A few weeks ago, when the temperature dropped below 70, I thought I should freeze to death.

I have a pair of gloves like that. They're very nice. I don't normally heat the room where the computer sits - too miserly - and by January I always feel like Bob Cratchit, wrapped in three layers of clothing with frost on the window panes.

I'm hoping for a mild winter. We've had a string of them- and I believe another is forecast. Climate change- like most things really- isn't wholly a bad thing.

Indeed.

Around here, when I was growing up, temperatures would drop below 0°F at least once during the winter, sometimes going as low as -10°F. These days, it hasn't been below 5°F for at least a decade.

And those are just the names that particularly caught my eye.
