Bateman's is in Burwash- an exceptionally pretty, little, Sussex village. The main street is planted with (what I think are) lime trees.  You can tell from the shadows what a very hot day this was.

This white house (so-named) looks like its been flown over from France. Those shutters are not in the lest bit English.

The church is 12th century.

I got chewing gum on my jeans taking this final picture. What sort of an eejit discards chewing gum in a churchyard?

the same kind of person who empties their ash trays in the church parking lot.

Nice pictures, Tony!

It's annoying isn't it? I didn't notice the gum until much, much later- which meant that it wound up on the car seat too.

Lime trees? Those would be Linden trees in the US, I think. They can get quite massive.

That last picture is great, despite the gum encounter. People are just thoughtless.

These lindens are clearly kept well clipped.

I was wondering exactly the same thing. Nice, anyway.

Sadly, I doubt it. The skull and crossbones is a very common motif on 18th century gravestones.

Besides, East Sussex isn't really pirate country. Smuggling more like.

Aww... okay
I was hoping for it being the grave of some famous scoundrel. :^)

K and I got married in that church. K's parents lived on the high street, in the black-fronted building in the first photo.
