Bunny-run

We did a bunny-run this morning.

And what's a bunny run?

It's what happens when a lot of rabbit-obsessives (linked by the Internet) gang together to transport a rabbit in need of a home from one part of the country to another. In this case the spare rabbit was living in Manchester and the person who wanted to give it a home lives in Norfolk- a long and expensive round trip. So the obsessives broke the route into stages and Ailz volunteered us for the first 30 miles. Accordingly we picked our rabbit up and took it across the inky-blue moors to a house in Barnsley where another person is going to collect it this afternoon and take it to Lincoln for a rendezvous at the railway station with the person who is taking it by train to its final destination.  Easier to buy your rabbit from the pet shop? Yes- but rabbit-obsessives disapprove of pet shops.

This rabbit is called Cloud and you can guess what colour it is. Dirty grey? No, white. WHITE. I had a rabbit called Cloud when I was a little boy (I'm sure I thought I was being original) which Kissa (short for Clarissa) Chapman- with whom I was moonishly in love- gave me because she was bored with it. I got bored with it too and passed it on to someone else- I forget who because I wasn't in love with him or her.  Poor Cloud.

saying well done sounds rather patronising... but well done anyway... the Friends of Akitas group I belong to have just managed to get and Akita from Belfast to Chesterfield... everyone doing a part of the journey, including a ferry run. We were informed that she had arrievd safely this morning @ 3am... and happy to be with her new owners...

What a sweet thought.. of a little white bunny called Cloud being reached from hand to hand all over the country. I remember that we did this with cancer meds for a kitty once (I bought them in Switzerland, 30 km from here, and then we managed to travel the meds all the way down to Sicily in something like 7 steps), but I never thought of doing something with a live animal too! Truly a poetic thing.

Poetic? I hadn't thought of it that way, but I guess it is.

I'm glad you do so much for the bunnies. They need a champion. Hey, you could start calling yourself "The Bunny Champion" because that's an awesome title to have.

Sadly, there are no pictures with this post. Alas!

Ailz is the true Bunny Champion. I just go along for the ride.

Bunnies do get a raw deal. There's a lot of bunny abuse out there.

They're very difficult to photograph. I don't think I've ever taken a good picture of one- and I do try.

Adding my only bunny icon...

See, that's a wonderful use of the Internet, but will the press write about it? Oh, no, they prefer stories that highlight the Evils of the Net, such as pedophile rings. Transporting bunnies to new homes would never make the front page, which is sad because such acts of kindness should be made more widely known.

The Internet is possibly the greatest new thing to have come about in my lifetime. I hate it that the media are always knocking it.

Similar runs exist for dogs and cats and there is a greyhound network here in Spain that is particularly active that gets abandoned greyhounds from the race tracks to all parts of Europe. Curiously, the UK and Germany are the biggest fans of Spanish greyhounds and there is quite a demand for them. It's like a doggie relay getting them there, exactly like your bunny-run.

This is a new world to me. I don't suppose these networks could function the way they do if it weren't for the internet.

I just read today in The Oregonian (after reading your great post) that abandoned cats and dogs in Beirut are finding their way to Portland, via a similar network. They get to fly here through donations of frequent flyer miles. What a long way to come just to get a new home, but I guess it's working out fine for everyone.... More bunny power to you and Ailz.
